Being a landlord isn’t easy. While dealing with property maintenance can be stressful and overwhelming at times, handling issues with your tenants can be especially problematic. But there’s a right and a wrong way to approach landlord/tenant issues. That’s why in this post we want to provide some tips that you can use to try to resolve these matters without having to resort to full-blown litigation.

Although there’s no cookie cutter approach that you can take to addressing problems with your tenants, there are some universal tips that you might find helpful. They include:

  • Knowing the law so that you can educate your tenants about your rights pursuant to the lease agreement and the tenant’s obligations.
  • Avoiding escalation so that you don’t damage your business’s reputation and create more stress than you need.
  • Trying to resolve the matter informally by talking the issue out with your tenant before rushing them into court.
  • Documenting every interaction you have with your tenant so that you can refer back to prior conversations and develop evidence that you can later use in court, if needed.
  • Considering methods of alternative dispute resolution.

When resolving your landlord/tenant issue seems unlikely, you need to think about taking the matter to court. Don’t shy away from that option, either. After all, you need to protect your interests as much as you can.

If you are, then now is the time to read up on your next steps. While the process can seem burdensome, you stand a good chance of competently and confidently navigating it to your advantage if you know the law and have evidence to support your position. So, if you’re ready to act on your rights, then now is the time to find any support that you may need in pursuing your case.
